    AI Made Everyone a Developer. Nobody Became an Operator.

    The apps you did not build are yours now

    Nobody asked your team to run five new apps this quarter. They arrived anyway. A product manager built a quoting tool with an AI assistant over a weekend. Marketing shipped a campaign microsite. A support lead wired a dashboard straight to the customer database because the assistant made it easy. Each one worked on the builder's laptop. Each one found real users. And each one is now yours, because you run DevOps, and production is where your name is on the door.

    The handoff has a script every operations lead knows by heart: someone from DevOps will handle it. It used to arrive a few times a quarter, attached to projects you had seen coming. Now it arrives weekly, attached to software you learned about after it shipped. And the team catching it was already loaded: Google's own SRE book reports its engineers averaging about a third of their time on toil, and that was measured before every department could produce deploy-ready software in a weekend.

    Here is the arithmetic behind the pile-up, and what to do about it.

    The multiplication ran on one side

    AI coding tools multiplied the number of people who can ship an app. They did not multiply the number of people who can run one. An app in front of real users still needs what it always needed: a security pass, somewhere to run, a deploy path, monitoring that notices when it breaks, and a person on call when it does. None of that got faster because the code was written in an afternoon. The building compressed. The running did not.

    So the queue forms. Ten builders became fifty; the operations side stayed three people. Every request is reasonable on its own, a database here, a domain there, a deploy, a dashboard. Together they are a denial of service with a friendly face.

    What gives way while you catch up

    Review depth: the security pass that had a day now gets an hour. The miss is rarely the obvious one; it is the credential an assistant pasted into a config because nobody told it not to.

    Provisioning discipline: builders who cannot wait provision for themselves, on a personal account if that is what it takes. The estate grows in places no inventory lists.

    Incident response: apps nobody hardened start paging people who never saw them ship. The 2am page for a service whose repo you cannot find is the moment the bill stops being a metaphor.

    Gatekeeping will not pay the bill

    The reflex is to slow the builders down: an intake form, a review board, an approved-tools list with teeth. It fails every time, because the company has just watched a working app ship over a weekend, and no committee survives that discovery. The builders got a force multiplier. Taking it away is not the fix. Getting the same multiplier for the people who run what gets built is.

    Put an agent workforce on the operations side
